A Chennai evening, square by square — Pondy Bazaar to the ECR

Chennai is India's chess capital, and an evening here can be played like a slow game: a few good squares, in the right order, and then your move.

Opening: the walkway at Pondy Bazaar

Start in T Nagar when the shops light up. Pondy Bazaar now has a wide paved walkway, so you can stroll past the silk and clothes shops instead of fighting the traffic, and Ranganathan Street and Panagal Park are a few minutes away. Eat early; the crowd thins after nine.

Middle game: the chessboard bridge and the sea

In 2022 Chennai painted the Napier Bridge, where the Cooum meets the Marina road, black and white like a chessboard, for the Chess Olympiad held at Mamallapuram. It suits the city that gave India Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa, and the arches are worth a slow drive at dusk.

From there the Marina runs south along the sea. Later in the evening the quieter beach is Elliot's, at Besant Nagar, where Second Avenue keeps its cafes and food places open with lights in the trees.

Endgame: the ECR drive

With a car and an hour to spare, take the East Coast Road south. It runs close to the sea past Kovalam, with casuarina trees on one side and the water on the other, and it is at its best in the last light.

Then: your move

Once the hotel door shuts behind you, one message to +91 91373 50846 sets up the last part: hotel, room, hour. The latest start is 2:30 AM after a Monday, 3 AM midweek and 5 AM over the weekend nights, at ₹3,000 for 2 hours, ₹8,000 for 6 or ₹15,000 for the night. See all the girls first, or let the desk suggest someone near you.
